Civil Engineering Technologist

Our client, a rapidly growing city located in the administrative region of Montérégie, offering both the tranquility of the suburbs and the benefits of a big city, is currently seeking a Civil Engineering Technologist for their engineering department.

Nature of position

Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of the Engineering Department, your main mandate will be to perform technical tasks related to municipal infrastructure works. You will also be responsible for preparing estimates, conducting surveys, and compiling various data for multiple projects. You will oversee construction sites and propose solutions to common problems in your field. Additionally, you will be tasked with providing technical information to citizens, contractors, developers, utility companies, consultants, and other city services. In this role, you will:

  • Participate in the preparation of estimates and documents (plans and specifications) for projects related to municipal infrastructure such as sewers, water mains, road structures, sidewalks, curbs, bike paths, lighting, bank stabilization, earthworks, park structures, pedestrian crossings, and others;
  • Perform surveying work using electronic GPS (GNSS), calculate and measure quantities, draw plans (CAD), and participate in the development of specifications for projects;
  • Carry out surveillance and monitoring of various projects; respond to complaints and requests related to your field and coordinate work on site with stakeholders (contractors, laboratories, consultants). Ensure quality and quantity control, ensure the smooth progress of work, and resolve common site problems, repairs, and road construction;
  • Organize and/or participate in site meetings and draft certain minutes;
  • Verify and inspect project work to make recommendations and progress payments jointly with contractors;
  • Update plans and technical data;
  • Calculate various data required for your sector such as quantities, volume, area, distance, etc.;
  • Manage requests for curb and sidewalk cuts; transmit information, provide estimates, and order execution;
  • Provide recommendations, validate the compliance of parts, materials, workshop drawings, and service connection plans, and monitor the work of these connections;
  • Verify requests from utility companies, consultants, and contractors (construction, installation, repairs), and make recommendations for approval;
  • Provide technical information to citizens, contractors, developers, consultants, utility companies, and other city services, manage this information in various formats: computer files, plans, documents, etc.;
  • Conduct various inspections and surveys to follow up on complaints related to your sector;
  • Inspect various existing municipal structures and provide required information regarding their condition and make necessary recommendations;
  • Assist the asset management advisor as needed;
  • Receive, print, and file plans and computer files from external sources;
  • At the request of the public safety committee and/or your immediate supervisor, conduct traffic analyses, program radar, collect data, and prepare the study report using analysis software;
  • Supervise correction and repair work on pavement, crack sealing, and thermo-patching, measure surfaces, prepare estimates, payments, and documents, and monitor work;
  • Assist other city services as needed for various projects requiring technical expertise;
  • Perform any other tasks compatible with your duties.

Required qualification

  • Hold a college diploma in Civil Engineering Technology;
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of experience in the field;
  • Hold a General Health and Safety Certificate for Construction Sites (ASP Construction);
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel);
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD software;
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver's license;
  • Good knowledge of GPS usage;
  • Language skills: French (spoken and written), knowledge of English (an asset);
  • Possess time management and prioritization skills;
