Specialist, Environment and Sustainable Development Department

Our client, a company whose mission is to manage, operate, and maintain various transportation infrastructures, with activities spread across engineering, construction, and maintenance operations, is currently seeking a Specialist in Environment and Sustainable Development to continue improving the quality and efficiency of its services.

Nature of position

Reporting directly to the Director of Environment and Sustainable Development, the incumbent actively collaborates on the department's environmental action plan and sustainable development goals. These objectives include implementing environmental risk assessment and control, environmental compliance, biodiversity enhancement, land characterization, inventory, and remediation. In particular, they act as a resource person for environmental assessment and actively participate in the development and implementation of the sustainable development strategy. The individual serves as a primary contact for external stakeholders, leads public consultations, and coordinates interactions with stakeholders. They ensure the environmental compliance of the company's facilities and operations. The individual will advise managers and employees in project management, asset management, construction, operations, and maintenance sectors. In this role, the incumbent provides support and technical assistance to the director, receives and analyzes studies, stakeholder requests, reports, drawings, and specifications, and recommends actions to be taken. They manage environmental contracts and projects or others. In this capacity, you will:

  • Advise the director and other departments on all matters related to environmental assessment.
  • Assist the director, managers, and other departments in implementing the sustainable development strategy.
  • Design and agree on mitigation measures in collaboration with authorities.
  • Represent the company as an environmental assessment expert in public consultations.
  • Participate in the development of procedures and protocols and support internal teams on environmental compliance and permit acquisition issues.
  • Assess environmental risks and develop control and monitoring measures.
  • Develop and maintain relevant performance indicators.
  • Assist the director in budget preparation and produce periodic progress reports and indicators.
  • Assist the director by providing relevant information in the preparation of various reports, methods, or analysis grids and by monitoring initiatives, projects, and/or works.
  • Participate in and lead activities and/or projects related to sustainable development.
  • Perform any other tasks compatible with your duties.

Required qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in environmental characterization and contaminated land rehabilitation.
  • Proficiency in federal and provincial environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability in monitoring and administering assigned contracts, including evaluating work, conducting meetings, and negotiating payments.
  • Knowledge of the following software: MS Project, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken French, able to communicate verbally in English. It is preferable to have English language proficiency for this position, as it allows for effective communication with clients and partners.
  • Be aligned with objectives, know how to manage time and priorities to meet deadlines and report regularly.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work in a team, participate, and contribute to team efforts.
  • Being versatile, curious (research, documentation), rigorous, and demonstrating aptitude in exercising sound judgment in decision-making.
  • Master's degree in a closely related field to the environment and/or sustainable development (an asset).
  • Relevant experience in managing federal environmental assessment mandates (an asset).
  • Experience in preparing environmental quotes (terms of reference) is an asset.
