Mechanical Designer

Our client, a company specializing in the design and manufacturing of a wide range of products for North American electric power generation and distribution companies, is currently seeking a Mechanical Designer – Draftsperson.

Nature of position

Under the supervision of the Engineering Manager, your main mandate will be to create 3D and 2D drawings of components and assemblies, participate in new product development, and be responsible for managing 3D printers and implementing the PLM software. In this role, you will:

  • Participate in the development of new products and the modification of existing products;
  • Work closely with engineers, coordinators, and other team members to integrate changes and specific requirements;
  • Take part in continuous improvement activities;
  • Develop solid models and detailed drawings of complex parts and assemblies for new product development;
  • Ensure designs are manufacturable and, if necessary, propose design improvements to reduce costs and improve quality;
  • Revise drawings based on feedback and necessary adjustments throughout the project;
  • Ensure compliance with the design change and approval process;
  • Create CAD files in STEP, DXF, and other formats as needed;
  • Prepare artistic graphic work for product submissions, technical datasheets, and catalog illustrations and/or visual materials for departmental use;
  • Work directly with the R&E team and other departments to properly document product design requirements;
  • Assist the R&E Manager and coordinators in schedule management by organizing workflow;
  • Document drawing revisions;
  • Train R&E department staff and help them master design software;
  • Supervise and mentor junior employees to support their development and improve their skills;
  • Attend technical meetings, conferences, and specialized training relevant to your area of responsibility;
  • Represent the company professionally in all interactions with clients and other stakeholders;
  • Perform any other duties consistent with your role.

Required qualification

  • DEC in Mechanical Engineering, DEP in Industrial Drafting, or other relevant training;
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience;
  • Proficiency with a 3D modeling software (preferably Creo or SolidWorks);
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D (an asset);
  • Experience with technical drawing standards and geometric tolerancing;
  • Intermediate level of English (to communicate with anglophone colleagues in Ontario);
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and related documentation such as work orders, bills of materials, etc;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.).
