Prevention Advisor – Radiation Protection and Laser Safety
Our client, a well-established and recognized university institution in Quebec, consisting of four thematic, multidisciplinary, and sector-specific research and training centers, is currently seeking a Prevention Advisor – Radiation Risks (Radiation Protection and Laser Safety).
Nature of position
Under the supervision of the Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator within the Human Resources Department in Laval, you will act in an advisory capacity on all aspects of occupational health and safety. You will contribute to maintaining a healthy and safe environment for the university community. You will provide services related to prevention, monitoring, and the application of laws, regulations, and normative documents concerning occupational health and safety. In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Acting as a resource person for managers, professors, research staff, trades personnel, and students regarding all occupational health and safety matters, including risks related to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation;
- Providing advisory support related to the prevention of accidents, occupational illnesses, and radiation-related risks, particularly in radiation protection, laser safety, and magnetic field management, while supporting centers and departments in the development, implementation, and monitoring of institutional health and safety program ;
- Participating in the development and dissemination of normative documents and occupational health and safety prevention programs, including programs related to machine safety, lockout/tagout, confined spaces, radioactive materials, lasers, and magnetic field-emitting devices, in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards;
- Acting as the institutional Radiation Protection Officer (RPO/RSO) and Laser Safety Officer (LSO), in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and applicable standards, including managing permits, radioactive waste, and monitoring and compliance programs;
- Planning, coordinating, and carrying out information, awareness, training, and prevention activities related to occupational health and safety as well as specific risks associated with ionizing and non-ionizing radiation;
- Conducting regular inspections of workplaces and research facilities (laboratories, workshops, mechanical rooms, etc.) to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and permit conditions, identify potential risks, and recommend corrective actions required to ensure the safety of employees and students ;
- In collaboration with the relevant managers, organizing required interventions, participating in incident and accident investigations and analyses, formulating appropriate recommendations, and ensuring necessary follow-ups in compliance with institutional policies and legal requirements ;
- Acting as the institution's representative and delegate with governmental and regulatory bodies regarding occupational health and safety, radiation protection, and laser safety matters;
- Acting as a resource person for radiation risk management within the emergency measures committee and as part of facility planning, renovation, or specialized equipment implementation projects;
- Participating in meetings and activities of health and safety committees, working groups, and other institutional bodies, and ensuring follow-up on recommendations made;
- Drafting, updating, and maintaining records of various programs, procedures, reports, registers, and management manuals related to occupational health and safety and radiation risk management;
- Performing all other tasks compatible with your functions.
Required qualification
- Bachelor's degree in science (physics, chemistry, etc.) or in a field relevant to the position, combined with relevant occupational health and safety experience;
- Master's degree in research in a field relevant to the position's activities considered an asset;
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience;
- Very good knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and developments in occupational health and safety case law;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Demonstrated writing abilities;
- Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple files simultaneously while maintaining high-quality work.
