Civil Engineering Technician

Our client, a company whose mission is to manage, operate, and maintain various transportation infrastructures, with activities spanning engineering, construction, and maintenance operations, is currently seeking a Civil Engineering Technician to continue improving the quality and efficiency of its services.

Nature of position

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for supporting the management of engineering contracts as well as projects. You will provide support to engineers responsible for engineering contracts regarding work quality monitoring, work planning, budget and cost control, schedule compliance, analyses, and change order processing. You will also be responsible for carrying out various technical and administrative tasks related to the monitoring of the company's engineering contracts. You must ensure the quality of services delivered by consultants through evaluations of their work. You will also collaborate in the development and implementation of new tools aimed at improving contract and project management. More specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting engineers in their duties by acting as an advisory resource and providing technical and administrative support, including document preparation and revision, information research, data compilation, proper file management, and preparation of progress reports as needed;
  • Providing technical expertise in the technical and administrative monitoring of consultant activities and ensuring proper execution of their contracts according to the terms of reference requirements (quality, scope of work, costs, and schedules), in collaboration with engineers;
  • Participating in the preparation of authorizations for contract modifications (change notices and amendments);
  • Identifying discrepancies, issues, and problematic situations to engineers while suggesting solutions and recommendations;
  • Participating in the analysis and calculation of various data and statistics related to the condition of structures and work activities;
  • Upon request, conducting site visits to structures for surveys or targeted inspections, as well as visiting construction sites to observe work methods and results;
  • Collaborating in the preparation of terms of reference for awarding contracts to consulting engineering firms;
  • Verifying and analyzing bids and service proposals, as well as preparing bid analysis tables;
  • Participating in technical reviews, ensuring quality, and monitoring the issuance process of reports and tender documents prepared by consultants;
  • Verifying consultants' payment requests;
  • Analyzing internal work processes and tools and proposing measures to optimize the efforts of internal and external collaborators and improve operational efficiency;
  • Participating in various project management committees related to strategic initiatives and providing technical support to the project team;
  • Working closely with partners from other company departments and contributing to effective interdepartmental collaboration;
  • Performing any other tasks compatible with the position.

Required qualification

  • College diploma (DEC) in Civil Engineering;
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience in civil engineering, including design experience in the rehabilitation and construction of concrete and steel civil engineering structures;
  • Excellent understanding of reading plans, specifications, and technical drawings;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in French and good knowledge of English, both spoken and written;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook), as well as AutoCAD software for computer-aided drafting (CAD) consultation purposes;
  • Ability to work at heights or in confined spaces;
  • ASP Construction site safety certification card;
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license;
  • Knowledge of generative AI tools such as Copilot and prompt engineering.
