Engineer, Engineering Department
Our client, an organization whose mission is to manage, operate, and maintain various transportation infrastructures, with activities spanning engineering, construction, and maintenance operations, is currently seeking an Engineer for its Engineering Department in order to continue improving the quality and efficiency of its services.
Nature of position
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for implementing the maintenance program through the delivery of major projects involving the organization's civil engineering structures. In this capacity, you will develop and oversee contracts with consulting engineering firms to carry out studies and project design work. This includes, among other responsibilities, planning, budget and cost control, schedule and quality management, as well as the analysis and processing of contract amendments related to engineering contract administration. You will receive, analyze, and provide comments on studies, reports, drawings, and specifications prepared by consulting engineering firms. You will also provide technical support and assistance to project teams and management. Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing terms of reference for the awarding of professional services contracts to consulting engineering firms for studies and design work, from preliminary design through the preparation of drawings and specifications, for infrastructure maintenance or improvement projects, as well as for technical assistance during construction;
- Ensuring that engineering contracts are carried out in compliance with contractual requirements, including deliverable quality and adherence to scope, budget, and schedule;
- Coordinating the professional services of consultants retained for the design of major maintenance projects, various studies, and technical assistance;
- Reviewing studies, drawings, and specifications prepared by consultants and making recommendations to the Director of Projects, validating the measures to be taken, and following up on their implementation;
- Reviewing and commenting on studies, as well as construction drawings and specifications;
- Informing and communicating effectively with consultants, directors, the project team, and the construction team;
- Preparing the required authorizations for contract amendments;
- Monitoring progress reports for consultant payments and ensuring control of project schedules and financial forecasts;
- Collaborating with the Director of Engineering;
- Assisting management with project planning, process development, and budget preparation;
- Supporting the Director of Engineering, particularly by providing relevant information for the preparation of various reports and ensuring contract follow-up;
- Identifying issues and making recommendations regarding their resolution;
- Representing the organization at meetings with partners;
- Participating in the development of standard specifications and terms of reference;
- Contributing to the improvement of the organization's operational processes;
- Performing any other duties or responsibilities related to the position.
Required qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Engineering, ideally with a specialization in structures;
- Candidate for the Engineering Profession (CEP) status or membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ);
- Skills in overseeing and administering assigned contracts, including evaluating work, conducting meetings, and negotiating payments;
- Excellent command of written and spoken French and very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken;
- Knowledge of generative AI tools such as Copilot and prompt engineering is considered an asset;
- Familiarity with bridge, civil structure, and roadway design and construction standards is considered an asset.
